Who am I?
I am an individual investor who has been traded Japanese stocks and building assets for over 10 years.
How many assets do you own?
Now, it is 36 million Japanese yen.
("0.0067$/yen" would be $234,500. This article uses 0.0067$/yen (150 yen/$))
Most of my assets are stocks, I have no car, and I live in a rented. I do not need a car in Tokyo because of the excellent public transportation system.
Ninety percent of my holdings are in Japanese individual stocks. Of the remainder, half is held in mutual funds in the S&P and All Country World Index (MSCI ACWI). The remainder is in U.S. stocks, which I own in Berkshire Hathaway Inc.
How have the assets changed?
Asset trends are as follows
- 2012... At the beginning of the year, it was 0 yen. I started saving in earnest and saved up to about 1,150,000 yen (approx. $7600) at the end of the year.
- 2013-2016... I continued to save and invest and built up assets of about 10 million yen (about $66,000).
- 2017... My stock soared, and at one point, my assets exceeded about 40 million yen (about $266,000).
- 2018... My stock and assets go down to about $15,000,000 (about $100,000).
- 2019-2022... There have been times when my assets have dropped significantly due to the coronavirus. But generally hover around 18 million yen (about $120,000).
- 2023... With the government's decision to treat the coronavirus the same way as the flu, the economy is returning to normal, and the positive impact is that my stocks have increased in value significantly, growing to 36 million yen (about $240,000) in assets.
What is your investment style?
I invest in growth stocks to hold them for the long term. Warren Buffett heavily influenced my investment style. I buy stocks of companies expected to increase sales and profits and have excellent ROE and other indicators.
There are many excellent companies listed in Japan. I want to introduce my leading stocks and other information in future posts. I plan to introduce excellent Japanese companies, their company characteristics, and changes in their performance.
Why did you start a website?
This is to provide fascinating and funny stories about Japanese stocks! Other than that, we will provide hot information such as trends related to Japanese finance.
Japanese Stock Information
I am Japanese, and it takes me a long time to read the English financial statements of American and British companies. I also do not know where to find websites that explain the financial statements of foreign companies in an easy-to-understand manner. There is not much information on foreign stocks in Japan that Americans and British people are exposed to, of course. I think this is the same for Japanese stocks from the viewpoint of people overseas. People from overseas would like to buy Japanese stocks, but they may not know the financial information of Japanese companies or what kind of companies are listed on the stock exchange. Therefore, I would like to introduce information on Japanese stocks I researched on this site. And I would like to let more people overseas know about excellent Japanese companies.
A Funny Story about Japanese Stocks
Do you know "Shohei Ohtani"? He is a Major League Baseball player who won the MVP award. If you were told that there is a company whose stock price changes depending on how well he performs, would you believe it? Look at the following chart. This is a stock price chart of a company named "OTANI KOGYO CO., LTD. (Otani Industries)."
("Ohtani" and "Otani" are pronounced the same in Japanese and written "大谷")
Shohei Ohtani had a solid start to the 2023 season.
He hit a home run every day, especially in June. He was also an excellent pitcher. However, on August 23, he was diagnosed with ligament damage. He continued to play as a hitter, but his season ended on September 4 against Athletic.
The share price has been rising and falling precisely in line with Shohei Otani's success. Otani Kogyo is a company whose main products are power distribution hardware for electric power companies and telecommunications hardware for telecommunications carriers. It is not a sports company and has no connection with Shohei Otani, but the name "Otani" is the only reason for the linkage.
These funny things can happen in the Japanese market. I will continue to post interesting topics related to the stock market.
